| Re: My Thoughts on the FTC Disclosure Rules and Bloggers 4 months ago | |
| A thought comes to mind. Is this a way to keep "citizen journalism, ie bloggers" at bay so that reputable, professional journalism keeps their position? I'm not screaming conspiracy here, just wondering if the FTC is being influenced by the legitimate news industry?I think that full disclosure is always welcome and it makes sense to me.I just hope we can move on quickly and get back to communicating and connecting to the best of our ability and if we get paid for it, there's full disclosure. Pretty simple to me, I guess. :-)Ed | |
| Re: Starting Your Social Media Case 4 months ago | |
| Great, easy to implement tips Chris! It's scalable and it opens the dialog needed to understand the value of social media and best of all simple!I agree with many comments here, too.Getting companies to start is easy; but to keep it going and commit for the long haul will be the challenge. But we'll keep trying! Thanks for your great blog.Ed | |
| Re: Disclosure Policy of The Michel Fortin Blog 4 months ago | |
| Michel,I have to say, while you don't know me at all, I have been following your writing for years, in your ezine and now, periodically, through your blog. And I've finally stepped up to make a comment, because your full disclosure policy really struck a chord with me. I think if everyone would just put forth a disclosure policy of sorts, we'd have less misunderstandings or we would have less incorrect assumptions.Which brings me to a humorous thought....maybe a disclosure such as yours, can be redone to be included prior to dating or getting married?? LOLSeriously, thanks for this post. I already re-tweeted, mainly because I want to have it in my Tweets for later bookmarking, but also because it's some good info!Happy belated Canadian Thanksgiving too! | Re: 100 Faces Of Summer And Fall (Sony DigiDad Project) 4 months ago | |
| Funny, this is the first post that got me introduced to your blog and I failed to even make a comment till now! :-)I found out about your blog via Chris Brogan's recent post about the Sony DigiDad project. Wow, that's pretty cool, to get a bunch of tech dads together to review and blog about Sony's gear. I admit, I'm a little jealous, but really mostly proud that I'm finally seeing dads get their due time. After all, haven't we been seeing so much about "mommy bloggers?!"So, just wanted to say awesome about the Sony DigiDad project and also GREAT PICTURES. Very cute photos of your daughter...Now I'm inspired by your post to go back and put together a collage of photos in iMovie from when my daughter was younger at the same age as yours is now. She's 13 now, but I can still remember when she used to be little and want to go everywhere with her dad. Now, I get to leave messages on her Facebook wall and maybe she'll respond to dad!! LOL What happened to the time? Thanks for your pics Max...Ed | |
| Re: Figuring Out Social Media? The Answer Is Not Advertising 4 months ago | |
| Thank you Max for this post. Working with a client right now and it's difficult to put into words that using the social media bandwagon IS NOT about how to sell more or how to advertise their products using Facebook or Twitter. It's about sharing stories, and connecting, yadda yadda...I like that figure Scott Monty mentioned. WOW! 1%=2000 voices on the social web. THAT would be daunting, yet it would be crazy to see that scale reach consumers for any business. Pretty amazing to think that it's possible though. The culture part I "get." But just how do you quantitatively explain this to a business owner or traditional marketer? Is there a fine line at creating a culture to produce a "company-sponsored fan" or do we just sit and hope that someone will just start a blog about our product/service?Can an agency or consultant help a company with "priming" the waters by starting up such an endeavor, using a few fans or running some promo or contest in order to get one?Is it a social media "faux pas" to manufacture a social media culture around a brand, product or service? Can we do something hyperlocal for business? After all, even the small mom and pop businesses can use some of this new fangled social media mumbo jumbo, right?! ;-)Culture and scale...how can we define in terms we can understand for the small local busienss?Ed | |
| Re: Some Bloggers Can Be Bought, But Not Me 4 months ago | |
| Max, you bring up some great points in the post and one that I've had questions and concerns about.Journalists are looking more like bloggers and bloggers more like journalists everyday, IMHO. I think, why do EITHER have to be bothered with all this worry over "selling out" or whether or not the FTC is going to "tax your words?!"Max, I need your help in dealing with an opportunity to connect with and speak to the Journalism school and professionals here in my neck of the woods. What is the future of "self-publishing" or "citizen journalism" and does the blogger have a role in influencing the future of journalism? I know you as a blogger have a role to be authentic and transparent. I appreciate that a ton. But, in reality, can't we all be "bought" somehow? What constitutes being "bought?!"Ed | |
| Re: The Sony Connected Bedroom – My Kids Jump for Joy! 4 months ago | |
| Did you get to integrate everything through the your network, in order to access the other media (photos, music) pretty easily through the Sony system? From what I read it sounded like it was a pretty easy setup.I'm thoroughly always impressed with Sony's gear and have been a user ever since I had one of the first Sony Walkmans! :-)The Bravia looks like a great HD screen to include in a home theater setup. Did I miss what you had hooked up for audio? Thanks,Ed | |
| Re: Barcamp or Bored Camp? 4 months ago | |
| Hi Geordie - I had similar thoughts, but being very ADHD it's very unusual for me to get bored or sit still for very long. (Dale Chumbley can attest to that, at least I can channel some of it into playing tunes on the piano!)But back to your post - I don't think you're truly "Bored" but just not challenged and while I agree with many of the commenters, that you need to present (if you did, my bad...too busy running around to see everyone), I think we at differing levels of advanced knowledge, should do a power session? (btw, @nbostic Nick Thanks for GREAT info and input on the session we both were in. I have to go through my notes to find exactly what you said, to give proper attribution).Or maybe an advance coalition (Jim Reppond alluded to something similar) is an idea?I agree with Jay & Dale and everyone else with the general thought "we are only as bored as we put in to it." Geordie, you are further along than 90% of the audience, IMHO and I feel like you share a lot already. I think you are looking for what I'm looking for or more of which is more "A-HA" moments (no not the band...). I'm looking for opportunities at REBarcamp events that says "here's something you should do or here's some new knowledge that will help you and others." Just an amazingly simple "A-HA" moment. :-)Very hyperfocused sessions, such as the testing topics @housechick mentioned or one like Drew Meyer's, I believe would cure my boredom factor. :-)I guess for what it's worth, I throw up a suggestion: not that we who use the tools or blog or teach or present are any "better" or more knowledgeable, but I think an ADVANCED REBARCAMP would be welcome to the more "veterans" on the block. What say ye?I'm not saying the underlying theme and culture of Rebarcamp's be ignored or replaced. But an extension of the Rebarcamp movement could allow for a half-day "Advanced Sessions" with topics such as you and others mentioned. It could be something easier to organize, doesn't necessarily NEED sponsors (or $175 like the REbarcamp Bellevue) and could be titled "REBarcamp The Advanced Sessions" - Any thoughts?Again, not to alienate or leave anyone out, it's just that to do one day that tries to be all things to all attendees, might be doing what we teach not to do. Trying to be all things to all customers...I'm sure we wouldn't have to necessarily call it REbarcamp (what is the intellectual property rights to usage of the name?) but I know that advanced subjects are already being offered from so many sources.Participating is the core aspect to finding the "A-Ha" moments for me; every time I go to events like these, my sole focus is "what can ANYONE teach me today?" And than my ADHD takes over, and eventually I offer up info and my questions lead me to the "A-Ha" of the day, from a presenter, from a self-proclaimed "newbie" or from another colleague, preventing me from getting too bored.Hope that offers another viewpoint...Thanks again Geordie and it was great meeting you IRL in Seattle. All the best to you,Ed B | |
| RE BarCamp : Changes for REBarCamp.com 4 months ago | |
| Todd, Great to have "met" you online. I know we'll be losing a great asset such as you, but it's understandable, since you've been working so hard at helping REBarcamp as a volunteer. Contact me when you get a chance, because a few of my clients and sponsors may be available with resources to help regionally with organizing and ponying up some support dollars to keep this rebarcamp.com going. Also, it's interesting to note, that I just heard about a Journalism Barcamp going on October 25th at the University of Oregon Campus, the day after "Be a better journalist" conference I'm speaking at and attending. I can't wait to see their Barcamp, in a journalism setting. I believe it's one of the first, and they'll be covering similar topics as the REBarcamps do, but from a journalistic point of view. Should be really interesting. Here's the URL, in case anyone in Oregon/Washington/No California wanna go: Be A Better Journalist and Information on Journalism Barcamp. You've been a valuable resource and from what I have learned about you online, a great guy. I can't wait to meet you IRL! Take care and happy trails to you in Chicago. Take care, Ed Bisquera | |

I often feel the same way, now that I'm teaching/speaking all up and down I-5 in Washington and Oregon, I get so overwhelmed.Btw, have followed you on your other blog and watched a few of your webinars about building a blog in 5 days. Great stuff! I've secretly watched and tried copying your stuff, but I think I'd rather be open and transparent and ask if I can interview you for a future usage up here for RE/Mortgage events in Wa/Or.It's great to see you here on Todd Carpenter's mortgage blog. Where have I been all these years that I didn't find Lendarama sooner?!?!Have a great weekend! And I'm going to try and NOT utter AHHHHHH again....Ed | |

| Re: How I Manage Facebook 6 months ago | |
| What a great way to just sum up some ways to utilize Facebook, by glimpsing into your world Chris. There are a few things I just recently did (like create my version of the short list, I call my "Close Peeps" and other groups) and it's helped manage more of the noise in the stream. While I don't have nearly that many friends as you, I'm hovering around 1200 and that's a lot for me to keep up with and manage.I'll have to check into your posts about LinkedIn and find out your approach. What I like about social media and Facebook in particular, is that you can decide how much of your persona you want to design for others to see. I mean, you can decide how much to blur the line between personal and business life. For me, I'm friends with many people I've met through the "business networking" world, and I've done business with friends I knew from as far back as high school. One question I get asked a lot whenever I'm speaking or teaching, is how do you deal with privacy? And also, how do you decide how much to make personal or business?I usually answer that there's no official "percentage mix" but that typically, you want to keep as much of your contributions, conversations, etc, as personal as possible, with very little reference to "business." I certainly would suggest refraining from any traditional "selling," for sure!Regarding photos, you can host them at FB without any problems, but one thing people forget, is the level of privacy that can be assigned to a photo album, a particular photo or for any other action on FB. You could have a photo visible by EVERYONE in your network except for 4 friends. You can have it visible to only ONE friend. The level of complexity on privacy settings are nearly unlimited and I think not everyone on FB really knows how to use the privacy settings to their full advantage. Thanks again for a great post Chris.Ed BisqueraFollow me on Twitter @edbisquera | |
| KATU - Portland, OR : Local school now using social media | KATU.com - Portland, Oregon | Local 6 months ago | |
| For the most part, I agree with the district's choice to utilize 21st century tools to inform and communicate. But there still is much to be learned about how social media works and Evergreen School District's intentions, as is evident in the comments above. I think people need to be aware (this is my assumption), that the district intends to use both Facebook and Twitter as a one-way communication tool and that teens pictures will not be accessible through the Facebook Business page the district created nor any privacy concerns regarding Twitter. It's clear many people still don't know how Facebook or Twitter really works, so I'll try to illustrate. 1. It's likely that the ESD has a social media policy in place (I would assume it's under their communications/PR policy in relation to images of students and its use) and that images are covered under a policy designed to protect students' identity if need be. Also, I would imagine their social media policy is designed that they're top mission, is to use the social media sites to share information, much like they do already. Not much should change, except now the delivery medium is through a social media site. 2. Students who have personal Facebook accounts will likely not be accessible via the district Facebook page, since Evergreen School District will have a BUSINESS Page and NOT a personal page (they aren't allowed, by the terms of service of Facebook to have a personal page anyway). Since the district is a semi-commercial entity, they will have a business Facebook page, of which people on Facebook wanting to keep up with updates, will become "fans" of the page. The privacy settings should be in place to protect any fans (students, parents, others). 3. Twitter, by its' design and nature, offers a buffer of privacy, as Twitter is just a communication tool and doesn't reveal any information about the person, other than name, location and website URL, if the person puts one in. Twitter is still new to many people and I understand the confusion among new users. 4. Showing students how to properly engage and use the new media tools online will prepare them for the future, for college and for the future workforce. Many job positions I'm seeing now (especially in communications and marketing) REQUIRE that applicants be proficient in social media tools such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, etc. I also think that the basics must still be adhered to, though and I totally agree with SumTingWong, in that students still need to learn how to read, write, etc. But I think using the social media tools will in some ways help. Azoth - I would thnk the ESD social media policy covers "friending" clearly. What the ESD will have on Facebook is a "business/fan page" which people become "fans" and not "friends." Teens may or may not become "fans" but becoming friends with teachers will likely not be allowed. (at least in my humble opinion it shouldn't be). I'm sure there's still a lot to really iron out, but I think there's no better way to learn the new technology, than by immersing in it and using it to the best of their ability. At least the Evergreen School District is addressing this new trend, instead of falling behind, like education systems sometimes do. | Hi Chris,I know I've found this post of yours nearly over a year later, but we're still so behind in the Social Media game and I thought I'd chime in as I'm a Social Media Instructor for Continuing Education Clock Hours for Realtors in the State of Washington. And in this vertical market, we're still WAAAY behind! :-)But I think the early adopters, movers and shakers can still make a go and contribute something. So I'd like to develop a series, with your help or your input or at least give you credit, on "Social Media Starter Series For Real Estate Professionals - 90 Days to becoming a better SM user" or something shorter or better than that.Anyway, I retweeted this post, even though it's a year old, it still is relatively new info and I appreciate the post.
