Re: Open Discussion: Where Do You Draw the Line on Deleting Comments? a day ago
Well, yeah - Haydon's a given... ;-)

Re: The Twilight Saga: Eclipse Trailer is Out [VIDEO] a day ago
Hi Jenny,It has nothing to do with age bracket as it does with content. If this was a report on how teens and Gen Y's are using something, or changing the way a social media platform works (or anything along that line of thinking), then it's a viable social media story. But a trailer for Twilight? That's like putting a video for preparing sausage meat on a vegetarian website... ;-)

Re: The Twilight Saga: Eclipse Trailer is Out [VIDEO] 2 days ago
And this is social media.... how?

Re: Open Discussion: Where Do You Draw the Line on Deleting Comments? 2 days ago
I have an Open Comment policy and I allow all comments to go through unmoderated. I do have filters in place to stop certain ones before approval, but that's more to do with links than anything else. The only time I'll delete (or edit) a comment is when it's a personal attack, racist, sexist, homophobic or bigoted in any way, or has no relevance and is just filled with self-referential links. Apart from that, good to go. :)

Re: Social Media 101 In Ten Slides 4 days ago
Dude, this is quite simply brilliant. I can't really add anything to the comments already left. Great stuff.PS - okay, actually, I can add a little. I second Joe's view about ten times. :)

Re: Top 5 People Who Need To Shut Up a week ago
Hehe, love this post, Miss Kingston :)#6 - The person in the movie theatre that's seen the movie already, and proceeds to explain the plot points to his or her friend who needs such information. Or, on the same field, the person at the movies (usually boyfriend/girlfriend/wife/husband) who has to ask ON EVERY SINGLE F***ING PLOT POINT why that happened.Aarrgh! :)

Re: Free Interns and 22K Price Tags a week ago
Hmmm...Check these kids out. Still think they shouldn't have done anything because they hadn't "proved themself"?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_child_prod...LinkedIn is one tool; there are many more. Don't judge a person on their LinkedIn profile as, again, you're simply using a very small boat to fish in a very big sea. For instance, many people are visual creatures, and the fact you don't have an image of you in your public profile may see you passed over for a lot of opportunities.

Re: Free Interns and 22K Price Tags a week ago
There's a big difference between haters and opinions, Erica. Yet there seems to be very little differentiating from many folks that use the term so quickly, sadly.

Re: Unpaid Intern Wanted a week ago
How do you determine what the best bits are? How do you filter the crap from the good? What tools are you giving the intern to do this? Are you providing the feeds and the search results, and then just saying, "Grab me 10 with keyword X, then the rest goes into keyword dump bin Y"?Anyone doing social search and monitoring knows 30 minutes a day every three days is diddly, Chris. It shortchanges results and shortchanges clients (or is this a personal, non-client project?).Either way, agree with Tim and Mike on this.

Re: Have Social Media & Social Networking Broken Up? a week ago
Fair point and one way to definitely look at it. But what is a social network? Is it confined to Twitter; Facebook; forums; IM; Ning; etc? Or is someone's blog a social network? Since you have a collection of people enjoying the platform and each other's thoughts - does a blog become a social network?Social media (if that's the term to give it) can be used via a blog to sell product, services, ideas, and even hope. So in that respect, do social networks need social media, or vice versa? However you look at it, people will use and enjoy the platforms that works for them and meets their needs at that time. It may be social media (or social networking) today; it may be augmented reality tomorrow. All that changes is the name; the people and the requirements remain the same and become the driving force of whatever's successful at any given time.

Re: Have Social Media & Social Networking Broken Up? a week ago
Hmm, interesting take. Think I agree with Karen in that they were never together. Sure, there's social in both words, but think of the two remaining words: media and networking.Media could be classed as a medium for sharing news and ideas, so in this respect, social media is spot on.Networking could be seen as meeting like-minded people in a similar and comfortable environment - what's safer than everyone knowing each other on Facebook, or Twitter, or Ning?So yeah - I think they were never together. But the great thing is you can float happily between the two and be none the worse for it. :)

Re: How One Man Used Social Media to Raise $91,000 for Charity a week ago
Hi there Casey,Thank you so much for allowing 12for12k space here at SME. Really enjoyed chatting with you and, as Doreen mentions, what a fantastic overview. 12for12k would never have gotten off the ground and achieved what it has (so far) without the support of everyone you mention here, and the awesome supporters, sponsors and partners that offer so much of themselves every month.Thank you again,Danny.

Re: Stop Talking About Yourself 2 weeks ago
Are we looking at both blogs and tweets, or separately? Just, if it's blogs only, then your average is a wee bit higher than 1:9. From your last 10 posts, including this one, three are self-referential:* http://www.chrisbrogan.com/comments-from-101/ * http://www.chrisbrogan.com/the-different-ways-i... * http://www.chrisbrogan.com/thesis-wordpress-theme/Which makes it 3:9, or a third. For blog posts, anyhoo.

Re: 10 Tips for Successful Twitter Fundraising 2 weeks ago
Supporters are offering often, Laurie - unfortunately many charities don't see the value, or don't want the help.

Re: 10 Tips for Successful Twitter Fundraising 2 weeks ago
Meaning that many charities are missing out on goodwill, supporters, donations and more. If you take into account the fact it's "normal people" making the difference as opposed to the actual charities (on social media, at least), there's obviously a huge disconnect that they need to look at :)

Re: 10 Tips for Successful Twitter Fundraising 2 weeks ago
Very true, Laurie - yet what's interesting to see is that it's just normal everyday folks that are starting these initiatives, as opposed to the charities themselves, in a lot of cases. This is where many non-profits need to look at examples like the ones above and really take their causes to the next level. :)

Re: 10 Tips for Successful Twitter Fundraising 2 weeks ago
Hey there Melissa,Thank you again for featuring 12for12k, as well as all the other awesome charities and organizations in the piece - really appreciate it. :) This is definitely a great guide post for any non-profit looking to see how they can use social as part of their campaigns.Just a quick heads-up, it was Dave Folkens (@dfolkens on Twitter) who came up with the Super Bowl idea. Yet more reason (as if any were needed after raising more than $91,000 in 2009!) to love the 12for12k community :)

Re: Do Your Blog Readers Know Who You Are? 2 weeks ago
Good call, Mike (and something I should have had in the post, gah!).What's funny about the online space (and especially the rise in popularity of social media) is the use of the word "transparency". Yet so many of the key bloggers and talkers in this space don't even have a picture of themselves on their About page, which makes you think, "Who are you?". Hardly the adverts of transparency... ;-)So yes - great call!

Re: Bloggers can learn something from South Beach 2 weeks ago
Bang on post, Grant (and I'm jealous you got your inspiration in Miami - I need to go more exotice for mine!).It's getting more difficult to stand out, especially for newer bloggers on the scene (although bloggers that are established shouldn't rest on their laurels, either). For me, the key differentiator is the voice of the blogger. You can talk about the same topics, but if you have humour, or warmth, or personality - I'll take that over the best written but robotic post any day.And yes, keeping a tidy house is key - one reason I love the Headway theme so much, I can make it as unique as I want. Cheers!

Re: What is Blogging? 2 weeks ago
Great stuff, Michael, and loving the "it's everything and nothing" angle. I think bloggers sometimes get too caught up with how "important" their blog is. Yes, a good blog divulges great info, tips and facts to help others (as well as the blogger). But it's not an historical tome that created the world - stop thinking it is.Cheers!

Re: Infographic: How Facebook Grew To 400 Million Users 2 weeks ago
More than likely - just wish they'd use the one similar to the China comparison. Say to someone that Facebook is 1/3 the size of China's population is pretty compelling on its own :)

Re: Infographic: How Facebook Grew To 400 Million Users 2 weeks ago
Hi Nizam,Nice collection of stats and breakdown, cheers. I do wish people (not you, those putting the stats together) would stop using the "one of the biggest countries" argument though. Facebook is made up of many different users and cultures from numerous countries. If Facebook was a real country, you'd have to have every person leaving their own countries to live there - probably not very realistic.By all means, compare individual geographical numbers on Facebook, but using the collated info seems a bit of a cheat. ;-)

Re: Social Media Experience Tips To Spark Your Blog 2 weeks ago
Love the fact that one of your points is "Ask for Feedback." This is probably one of the simplest and yet most overlooked approaches out there. It doesn't need to be restricted to social media either - anywhere where there's an action and reaction, the feedback pre-reaction can make all the difference.

Branded Tweetdeck – Great Idea or Waste of Time? 8 months ago
Thing is, though, would any brand be crazy enough to stop using the public feed for a branded one? It'd have to have a heck of a lot of downloads to make that worthwhile, no?Read more comments by Danny Brown

Branded Tweetdeck – Great Idea or Waste of Time? 8 months ago
Hey there Mark,By all accounts, the MashDeck replaces the existing one – not a good way to please existing users with current set ups.The reason I switched to Seesmic is that I was fed up with lack of updates from Tweetdeck, poor reliability and memory hog – killing my computer and restricting program speed is not the way to win me over. I can see that it may be beneficial for new users, but I'd still say it's in a limited way. All that's set up is one group – you still have to figure out the rest. And as you mentioned yourself, that's not too easy.Twhirl (or something similar) may be a good first third-party app for new users to try, then move on to either Seesmic, Tweetdeck or Mixero. Cheers, fella, always a pleasure hearing your thoughts. Read more comments by Danny Brown

Branded Tweetdeck – Great Idea or Waste of Time? 8 months ago
Ha, wasn't implying you were, Jim (nice disclosure though!) Your second option could be an incredibly useful add-on or plug-in (for both Forrester and brands in general). Particularly if you're aiming to target these users in an upcoming PR or marcomm strategy/campaign. I can definitely see the benefit there. With regards the search problems, I'd be really interested in an app that could integrate Twellow.com into the results. The results from there coupled with a dedicated info stream could be incredibly useful.Read more comments by Danny Brown

Branded Tweetdeck – Great Idea or Waste of Time? 8 months ago
I guess it works both ways as well – does Tweetdeck now have to have a disclaimer “As sponsored by Mashable and TechCrunch”? If it's sponsorship, of course…I agree, though, I think both publications need to be upfront about how the “deal” came about – otherwise there could be a pretty nasty backlash waiting on them if it later turns out there's more to it than just a “cool co-developed app”.Read more comments by Danny Brown

Branded Tweetdeck – Great Idea or Waste of Time? 8 months ago
These are some great suggestions, Jim, and certainly more than feasible. I'm just curious how different it would be from a non-branded app?Since most of Mashable and Techcrunch's current Twitter feed is simply RSS feeds from their website, you'd pretty much already have a “Mashable” or “TechCrunch” recommends-type feed with a separate column on your existing set-up.The group option is also currently there and works pretty well as is (and can obviously be tailored via the search option too). The trending option could be decent if worked well enough and they came up with a way of filtering out the trend hackers.I don't know – I just feel all the features that could be promoted for a brand version are already in use, or can be put to use. I'm still struggling to see the benefits at this time. Thanks for dropping by and sharing your views, appreciated.Read more comments by Danny Brown

Branded Tweetdeck – Great Idea or Waste of Time? 8 months ago
It's a strange one to think about. There are definitely opportunities for businesses and developers to make money on Twitter via their brand and product. But is a simple logo and feed the way to do it? Probably not. Although exclusive content (see it before other Twitter users) might work…Since I don;t use Tweetdeck anymore, I can only go by Twitter, networks and blog comments re. Tweetdeck (or any other app's) reliability and performance. There does seem to be a lot of dismay with Tweetedeck's iPhone app reliability (although I've seen positive reviews too). And yes, the app is only as good as the host platform.Though some seem to deal with Twitter's foibles better than others. To each their own… Read more comments by Danny Brown

MashDeck Launches: The Mashable Twitter Desktop App! 8 months ago
I think Tweetdeck would be better suited to getting their performance issues sorted out first, as opposed to worrying about branding columns (I see TechCrunch has their own version too).Besides, if I wanted Mashable's (or anyone else's) updates, I'd just set up my own column. Seems a bit of a strange feature (unless you really must have your bookmarked website's logo smiling at you).Read more comments by Danny Brown

Customer service and social media 8 months ago
I agree, and I think that’s where companies are falling down, more from monitoring as opposed to customer service (even though that’s still bad).Godin should know when something’s being said about him, as should tech companies and journos that are active in this space. The problem with larger brands is that they’re not using alerts or monitoring tools, and possibly not even searching for their own name in organic searches. So the ones using this type of space will be aware; the others are the ones that need educating.Read more comments by Danny Brown

"It takes all kind of people to make a menagerie." Can't remember who said it (it may even have been my old grandad!) but it kinda makes sense more and more as I get older.Everyone has strengths, either as a given or ones they stumble onto by mistake. The trick is in recognizing that something inherently different is about to happen, or has already happened. Some great examples here (and I say that modestly from your kind mention of me, Chris - I'm a voice, the 12for12k'ers are the speechmakers).Speaking of which, would you like to wear a nice shiny 12for12k avatar for 24 hours on Monday?
