We've already seen this on reddit before! He was not jailed 60 years for consensual sex. He was not jailed 60 years for _any_ sex, if any "sex" and not RAPE was had (since she was several years underage, it was obviously rape). He was sentenced after he was let out on probation, and he broke probation 3 times getting caught with pot. That's what the judge reacted to. You can't tell people to only obey conventions and ignore that they really want to do. It's pure bullshit. >**CONTEXT IMPOSITION FANTASY PROJECTION** >An attempt to impose his own intellectual or moral context on another person by someone who has closed his mind to reality and manufactured a fantasy, then expects (or if he is a tyrant, demands) others to share it and help him sustain it. He ignores the objective realities of the situation, concentrating instead on subjective perceptions that are false. >>"If you were terminally ill, you too would advocate life preservation." > >>"There are no atheists in foxholes." [While cringing in the foxhole, the atheist realizes fully that he does not believe in God: What sort of bloody–minded deity would let the creatures he created perpetrate something like this? ] Imposition of the Slave Mentality: >>"Aren't you thankful that they allow this?" [I am expected to limit myself to the context of "their" allowables.] (**this is your argument basically**) >The proper answer is, "No, I am resentful that they forbid other freedoms I should possess." >They have a six–inch knife and have stuck it four inches into me. Should I be thankful they have not shoved it in the final two inches? Or resentful that they have shoved it in four inches? [I am expected to accept their behavioral context and to judge my situation from within that context.] >>"Let 'em eat cake!" Where can I get an Adblock style host file? 8 months ago
Hey now, messing with the hosts file is _not_ that difficult and not really dangerous. Don't listen to Nacht. There are plenty of sources for comprehensive malware or ad blocking hosts files that you can simply swap out with, or append to, your current hosts file. Programs like "spybot search & destroy" will update your hosts file against malware and tracking cookies when possible, with regularity and safety, as well as apply passive protection in every web browser on your computer (IE, Firefox, Opera - I dunno about Chrome yet). There are also hosts files whose content you can append that contain an extensive list of pornography. But that will put hundreds of thousands of lines into your file. I prefer using a copy fom [here](http://hostsfile.mine.nu/downloads/ ) - there are different kinds of (regularly updated) hosts files you can swap/append that can apply either to your workstation or your home computer, with different formats so you can make it work with different kinds of firewalls, as well as different operating systems. It also has some useful adblockplus filterlists and some CSS you can use (via your usercontent.css or the extension Stylish) for specific element blocking.Read more comments by Aerik Knapp-Loomis

Re: Better Living Through Chemistry a year ago
HA!!That's great. As usual, "organic," "natural," and "free-range" don't really mean anything.Something doesn't have to be organic to be food. Even so, about everything we eat is organic anyways, if you go by it's actual chemical definition. Brian Dunning of Skeptoid.com points us to how all a producer has to do to earn his "free range" badge is to let turkeys or chickens walk a certain amount, even if it's still not a humane amount. Californians just voted to let chickens turn around in their cages. But they still urinate and defecate on each other enough that they get skin infections and eye infections that end up closing them with scarring. Some people into "organic food" or "raw food" insist that cooking food makes it inorganic, showing that most people, especially organic foodies, don't know what 'organic' means.Let's review what an organic compound is. Ever take o-chem in college? Organic chemistry is the study of carbon compounds, and organic compounds are those formed by living organisms, with molecules containing two or more carbon atoms, linked by carbon-carbon bonds. These can be double bonds, where the carbon atoms share 4 electrons, or in the case of saturated fatty acids, they can be single bonds, where the carbon atoms share two electrons, and the other electrons are shared with bonded hydrogen atoms. Breaking these bonds would, in effect, make an organic compound non-organic.So really, the claim being made by the raw food people is that cooking breaks those carbon-carbon bonds. You would have to really, really cook your food to break these bonds. Carbon-carbon bonds will begin to break at temperatures above 750 Fahrenheit, or about 400 Celsius. So if you cook your food in a ceramics kiln, then yes, it is possible to chemically change it into a non-organic compound. But if you're looking for it to happen at regular cooking temperatures, well then, you need to retake your o-chem.http://skeptoid.com/episodes/4019http ://skeptoid.com/episodes/4030As for "natural," well hey, plenty of poisons and venoms are natural. Are they still good? What isn't natural would have to be supernatural. Are you into ghost livestock? What really saddens me is that a lot of fellow feminists I know are into woo-woo and the organic food industry. It's pretty hard to talk to them about it as a skeptic as most Skeptics are total misogynists.Sigh.There are only two reasons for the better treatment of animals: to stop feeding bloodlust for the torture of other animals and act humanely, and to make it possible to cut down on antibiotics so that we don't render them useless too soon. The only other thing wrong with our food industry is our ludicrous dependence on corn. Anything manages to wipe our corn or bees and this country is in big trouble.

This is where feminists should lend a helping hand, but not do the heavy lifting. You got it right on that one. MRA's tend to argue, day in an day out, that feminists are responsible somehow in an increase in woman-on-male domestic violence, and that somehow it's a zero-sum game in which every time an organization for abused women does anything, it takes away from abused men. All of TV is male-oriented, so when a woman-focused cable channel is created, they scream "misandry!" and create Spike TV, because women had the nerve to lift themselves up without asking them how to do it first. And they try to carry that shit onto victim shelters, and demand that women do all the work of helping abused men, when they're not all that willing to do it themselves. Point in case, who helps gay men more? Feminists. By a long, long shot. It'd help if MRA's didn't constantly accuse feminists of claiming women don't do anything bad, exaggerate false rape claims, conflate recanting of a claim and failing to win in court as the same as a proof of deception, And allowing things like this done in their name.

At least one men's deodorant is taking a different stance. Nivea for Men has a commercial where they parody a bunch of Axe users, men in their late teens or early twenties, dressed in jeans or torn up slacks, dirty shirts, saying carp like "But this smell won't attract a mate for me!" and so on, then a guy in a suit (sort of) just says "It smells good and it's good for my skin. Who Owns Our Children’s Minds? (Clashing Culture) a year ago
Discussion? I think Nicholas Humphrey said it all: Children, I'll argue, have a human right not to have their minds crippled by exposure to other people's bad ideas -- no matter who these other people are. Parents, correspondingly, have no god-given licence to enculturate their children in whatever ways they personally choose: no right to limit the horizons of their children's knowledge, to bring them up in an atmosphere of dogma and superstition, or to insist they follow the straight and narrow paths of their own faith. In short, children have a right not to have their minds addled by nonsense. And we as a society have a duty to protect them from it. So we should no more allow parents to teach their children to believe, for example, in the literal truth of the Bible, or that the planets rule their lives, than we should allow parents to knock their children's teeth out or lock them in a dungeon. ... Well then, if this is so for bodies, the same for minds. Given, let's say, that most people who have been brought up as members of a sect would, if they only knew what they are being denied, have preferred to remain outside it. Given that almost no one who was not brought up this way volunteers to adopt the faith later in life. Given in short that it is not a faith that a free-thinker would adopt. Then, likewise, it seems clear that whoever takes advantage of their temporary power over a child's mind to impose this faith, is equally abusing this power and acting wrongly. ... Imagine that the choice is yours. That you have been faced, in the formative years of your life, with a choice between these two paths to enlightenment -- between basing your beliefs on the ideas of others imported from another country and another time, and basing them on ideas that you have been able to see growing in your home soil. Can there be any doubt that you will choose for yourself, that you will choose science? And because people will so choose, if they have the opportunity of scientific education, I say we as a society are entitled with good conscience to insist on their being given that opportunity. That is, we are entitled in effect to choose this way of thinking for them. Indeed we are not just entitled: in the case of children we are morally obliged to do so -- so as to protect them from being early victims of other ways of thinking that would remove them from the field.

FlashGot Media, Now!!! (Java, Quicktime and Other Good News) a year ago
Flashgot Media's attempts at grabbing the raw .flv files that flash players are rendering is pretty neat, but I've been having lots of trouble with it. Title attributes keep getting injected into the URL, and it doesn't get everything in the first place. Interestingly, Adblock Plus has been ahead of the game here (unintentionally) since the release of Firefox 3.0. Any time you're watching a flash video, just open the blockable items in adblock plus and search for "flv" or "subrequest" and voila! the .flv is directly listed. You'll get the file 99% of the time. More often than with flashgot media. It'll also grab any kind of stream source you can think of. I've grabbed .wmv's, .mp3's, .mp4's, you name it. You can download full songs from bludomain.com. Songs that re being relayed via flash, but this vulnerability makes it like an open directory. You can build a gallery to steal every song from that server. Adblock Plus 0.7.5+ is the only extension I know of that can capture collegehumor.com videos right now.

That's interesting. Some people aren't well protected and/or have bad security habits online. Often enough people have adware invading their browser that puts popups on their most visited sites or sites that are ripe with the keywords to activate the particular adware, and it only seems as if the site has a problem.

I haven't, but I'm an avid adblockplus user. And this thing with ads being inserted that the blogger didn't ask for thing, is a reason why I don't feel guilty one bit. Interesting, though, I don't see any ads being blocked right now. I think one thing users can do is to use firefox and use the Noscript extension. Allow individual wordpress blog domains one at a time. Allow finallyfeminism101.wordpress.com, but forbid www.wordpress.com, http://wordpress.com, and stats.wordpress.com. This way, only javascript you are writing into your template is active. The ads won't run, I don't think.

Re: Doctor Knows Best a year ago
I thought you may have gone somewhere with this until you heaped in the discrimination against midwives with discrimination against "alternative" (see: useless pseudoscience) medicine spheres, 'holistic' and 'herbal'.Like it or not, medicine is evidence-based. A history of midwivery doesn't prove it's efficacy any more than a history of, say, bloodletting and things like that. It's because of modern medicine that babies survive birth much, much, much more often than they did when midwives were the only help a childbirthing had. That argument is totally fallacious.A questoin arises: if midwives have so little medical training that you have to separate midwives and doctors as mutually exclusive by definition, how do they actually know what they're doing? Conventions and understanding are two different things. Perhaps that is why the AMA is against it -- medical endeavors (and childbirth is just that) need medical training. What frightens me is that, should the AMA successfully assist states in developing legislation that would force all women to give birth in a hospital because of safety, mother and child will effectively become property of the hospital.NO! That is not how things work. You also have to perform brain surgery in a hospital/clinic. Or any surgery, for that matter, except in cases of extreme emergency where no hospital is within reach to save person's life. The way you put it, all recipients of surgery have become hospital property. But it's just not so. You can't put an arbitrary line in the sand where those people are treated properly, but you're being discriminated against in the case of a single procedure that does not stand out from these other procedures on any merit.Damn right it's criminally negligent to deny a baby necessary medical care. A doctor loses his/her license if a bare minimum is not performed. What makes anybody else any different? Here I was under the impression that once a baby is born it is endowed with certain unalienable rights, such as the right not to be neglected into injury, but apparently I'm wrong because... because what? Because midwifery feels good? Sorry, but "spiritual experience" is no justification for medical negligence.
